Calgary is a beautiful city next door to the Rocky Mountains. Despite this playground, there is much dance and music in the city. The tango community has a unique history. We have a weekly practica running for over 10 yrs, and several milongas a month. The best approach would be to do some research on the city itself and come for a visit to investigate or explore the match of opportunities with your gifts. I would be happy to host you if I have the capacity in my home, which I usually do. You’d be wanting your car. If you drive here, you’ll see beautiful country.
Hi Mary Anne,
When are you going to come back dancing?
We have every Saturday a milonga, Tuesday and Thursday practicas and 8 workshops per year!
We miss you!
Patricia
Great idea! I would love to have a teacher come and fill in for me while I am in Buenos Aires every year. But conversely – I find that when I travel to teach, I have full classes and even people need to be turned away, and I get rave reviews. But in my own city, my classes, and especially my specialized workshops, are not as well attended. I’m sure that happens to many teachers. “A prophet is never respected in his hometown.” Sometimes hearing the same thing from a different teacher is what it takes.
Thank you Clay for your support . I live in the Hood River area and we have had a small take a practica weekly for more than six years . Harvey and I have been providing short lessons but it is only a stopgap until we find a real instructor. This area supports a swing and salsa lesson weekly that attract in excess of 40 people per night. I believe it is the right time to transform this tango community if the right instructor happens to be available. Last summer there were monthly lessons held at Maryhill Museum featuring Megan Pingree which were well attended.

Hi John,
Your post is very appealing indeed. I have been teaching tango in Alabama since 2003. I lived in Auburn until 2007 while working at Auburn University on environmental issues related to water quality teaching citizens how to protect their rivers. Back in 2003 I started the Auburn Tango Group, school of tango, which has been running since then. In 2007 I had to return to my home city Rosario, in Argentina. Since that moment I have been returning twice a year to Alabama, to keep alive the tango fire flame.
I have been teaching tango also through the AU Outreach Department to the community. I started a new group in Columbus, GA around 2013 and have been teaching in Montgomery and Birmingham for years as an guest instructor to local tango communities. I also teach in Argentina while I am there. Back in 2012 I started the Inclusive Tango School where we work with blind people. I would say this experience changed completely my way of feeling dancing and of course of teaching. Well, I have been teaching for almost 18 years so that there is a lot to say…
I assume Hood River is in Oregon. Interestingly my first contact with the US was in Corvallis, OR. I was very young, I love it. I would very much like to help your tango community to grow. Please let me know if you would like to explore possibilities which would make possible my participation in this proccess.
I will provide references and a brief bio upon request if you think that we could go ahead building this bridge.
Regards
Omar
Omar, let’s begin to explore how this might work. We are currently a small group of people 70 miles from Portland who are learning tango by sharing what we learn with each other. We have done this now for about eight years. Her hope is that this year we can step it up to a new level. We have finally found a person who is willing to do some tango instruction who is an advance tango dancer. However if it was possible you would add great vital energy and draw in more of the surrounding dance community.
Hi John,
Thanks for your inmediade reply. Good to know you found an advance dancer whilling to help and teach! This will definitely inflict great impulse to the growing process.
Of course I would very much like to help you at any level. You don’t know me and I don’t know you which means “who knows if this in going to work”. I believe that before getting married people needs get to know each other, dancing is a great way. So let’s dance first.
I’ll be in Alabama by sure from February 26 to April 4. Afterward I might have to return to Argentina but it is not sure yet. I will be teaching beginners, intermediate and advance students, doing groupal and private lessons. Weekends will be doing workshops in Birmingham, Coulumbus and Auburn.
I love starting new groups to spread tango dancing, its history, its pasion ! meting new people, experiencing the feelings of new challenges… besides, I love Oregon, Poly McBride is a good friend of mine.
Please feel completely free to start a brainstorming leading to find the way that would allowe me to help your tango community to grow. I’d lo ve it, seriously.
I think traveling to Hood River for a few days while I am in the US now would be a great way to start, while introducing myself and doing workshops.
I would love to stay over there for a while until the group step up to a new level, however I think a short introduction would be apropriate in order to start a lasting relation.
I’ll provide my email address in case you would like to comunicate with me privatelly.
Regards
Omar
